To test this, we used a pressure-mapping mat on top of the mattress. Testers lay on their backs and sides while the mat tracked pressure in real time using color-coded thermal visuals. Blue and green showed areas with light pressure, while yellow and red marked spots with higher tension.

This test gives us a clear look at how well a bed hugs the body in different sleep positions and whether it spreads weight evenly.

Getting too warm while you sleep can really throw off your rest, especially with twin XL foam mattresses that tend to hang onto body heat. To see how well each bed handled temps, we used a thermal gun to check how much warmth the mattress held.

First, we took a surface temperature reading. Next, a tester lay still on the bed for five minutes and recorded the temperature again right after getting up.

We scored the results based on how much the surface heated up:

• 5 degrees or less = Excellent
• 5 to 10 degrees = Good
• 10 to 15 degrees = Fair
• Over 15 degrees = Poor

Edge support checks how steady and firm a mattress feels around the sides. It also shows us if sleepers can actually use every inch of the bed’s surface, which really matters for twin XL sleepers who don’t have much space to work with.

We also use edge support as a sign of how long a mattress will last, since ones with tough edges are less likely to start drooping.

“A sturdy mattress has a solid support core and strong edges,” Dr. Miller said. “Those kinds of mattresses handle wear and tear better and keep their shape longer.”

To test edge support, we ran three experiments:

• Tape Measure Test: We set down weights (99 lbs, 154 lbs, and 198 lbs) along the edge to mimic different body sizes, then measured how much the mattress sank. For context, 3.7 inches of sinkage is about average across all the beds we’ve tested.
• Seated Test: Testers sat on the sides and stood up over and over, kind of like how you’d get out of bed in real life. This helped us see how the edge handles that everyday pressure.
• Full Body Test: Testers laid along the side of the mattress in different sleep positions to check if the edges felt as steady as the middle. A solid twin XL mattress should make the most of every bit of surface space.

Twin XL mattresses usually come in at about 38” x 80,” though sometimes you’ll see them listed as 39” long. No matter the tiny variations, twin XLs stretch roughly 5” longer than a standard twin bed. That extra bit of length makes them a great fit for solo sleepers who stand over six feet tall.

Twin XL vs Twin

People often call twin mattresses single beds, and they usually measure somewhere between 38”–39” wide and 74”–75” long. They’re the go-to for kids or adults making the most of smaller rooms.

Twin XL mattresses, sometimes known as extended twins or extra-long twins, add about 5” of length compared to a regular twin. College students often end up with twin XLs since they offer a little more stretch room while still sliding neatly into those tight dorm setups.

The feel, firmness, and thickness of memory foam change depending on the brand, model, and price point. In general, moving around on memory foam takes a little more effort than on other materials.

Memory foam beds do a great job of hugging your shape, which helps take pressure off key areas and keeps the spine lined up right for sleepers. The downside is that memory foam can let your body sink too far down, which might throw your spine out of line and cause stiffness in your lower back or neck.

Innerspring

Classic spring mattresses use a framework of steel coils throughout the bed. Coils usually create a firmer, springier feel and offer solid support, though they can also spread movement more easily. Pocketed coils do better with motion control since each coil is wrapped separately in fabric.

Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses mix and match materials like coils, foams, and latex to blend support with comfort. They’re made in all kinds of firmness levels, from soft and plush to extra firm.

Hybrid beds often hit a nice balance between structure and cushioning. They offer enough firmness to keep a sleeper’s spine aligned, while still giving a little softness around the hips. Depending on the hybrid’s design, though, some may sink too much or create pressure points if the top layer is overly soft, which could mess with alignment and cause hip or back pain.

Your ideal firmness level really depends on how you sleep. But if you’re not sure where to begin, most folks tend to feel comfy on a medium-firm mattress. When we test mattresses, we rate each one on a firmness scale from 1 to 10—1 being crazy soft and 10 being rock-hard. We usually land around 6.5 for that universally comfortable medium-firm feel.

“Sleeping on a mattress that’s either too stiff or too mushy for your position can cause serious pressure spots and long-term aches,” says Dr. Dasgupta. “It’s crucial to choose a firmness that fits your sleeping habits, weight, and day-to-day lifestyle. Body weight plays a big role in what kind of mattress feels right. As Dr. Harris explains, “People who weigh less will usually think a mattress feels firmer than someone heavier would.”

Lighter sleepers (under 130 pounds) often go for softer beds that cushion the body without swallowing them up. Average-weight sleepers (between 130 and 230 pounds) usually do best with something in the medium to medium-firm range for balanced support. Heavier sleepers (over 230 pounds) tend to need firmer or hybrid mattresses that keep them lifted and supported through the night.

Your sleep position also shapes what firmness works best. Side sleepers, who need a little extra give for the shoulders and hips, usually prefer a softer bed—around a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Back sleepers need proper spinal alignment, so they feel best on a medium-firm mattress—about 6.5 out of 10. Stomach sleepers, on the other hand, need something firmer—around a 7 or higher—to keep their hips from dipping too low and throwing their spine out of line.

Most queen-size beds range from a few hundred bucks to a few thousand, depending on build and quality.
