Other Mattresses We Researched
If you didn’t find what you were after in our list above, here are some other top-rated beds we often throw out there. I’ll run through what’s great about them and why they didn’t quite make the final cut.
- Leesa Original – The Leesa Original is a solid memory foam mattress that really impressed us during testing, racking up a bunch of high scores all around. It nails the balance between pressure relief and support, stays cool, has sturdy edges, and you can easily move around on it without waking up your partner. The Leesa Sapira Chill beat this one out because it feels a little softer and more approachable. But if you're after something firmer, the Original has you covered.
- Helix Midnight – Just like the Luxe version, the original Helix Midnight offers a nice mix of comfort and support, making it great for pretty much any sleeping position. We think it’s especially comfy for side sleepers, back sleepers, and anyone who tosses and turns. However, the Luxe did a little better in our tests, plus it’s got a fancier pillow top that adds a touch of luxury.
- Titan Plus – This one’s designed by Brooklyn Bedding for folks over 230 pounds who need a bed that can handle the extra weight. While it got great scores for being firm yet comfy, it didn’t do as well on things like cooling or pressure relief, which is why the WinkBed Plus came out on top for heavy sleepers.
How We Tested the Best Mattresses
The best mattresses we tested aced pretty much every category in our performance, construction, and customer service reviews. They’re built to last and are totally worth the money.
Overall Performance
We test mattresses in a bunch of different ways, like how well they relieve pressure, handle motion isolation, keep you cool, and more. Each area gets a score out of 5, and then we average them to get the mattress’s total score. Things like pressure relief, edge support, and how quick the mattress responds to pressure are weighted more because they really impact the overall feel and quality of the mattress.
Of all the mattresses we’ve tested, the average score we see is about 4.2 out of 5. So it makes sense that the best of the best would have at least that score, if not higher. This means the mattress had to score above 4.2 in multiple categories to make the cut. The mattresses we selected for this panel actually averaged a score of 4.5, which shows just how solid their performance is across the board.
Durability
When you're buying a new mattress, you’re gonna want it to last for years. Most mattresses are good for about 10 years, but some start falling apart sooner than that. How do you avoid the ones that won’t make the cut?
First off, I always say check out the construction of the mattress. If you can, go for coils instead of just foam, since that solid innerspring layer helps the bed hold its shape. If foam's your thing, make sure the memory foam layers are thick enough to stay supportive but still comfy.
In our studio, we look at edge support as a sign of durability. How well the edges hold up under weight can tell you how the rest of the mattress will do over time with all that pressure. That's why we test the beds by sitting and lying down on them, plus we use weight plates to mimic different body types. We rate edge support out of 5, so you can see how the bed did in these tests and get an idea of how long it’ll last.
Lastly, we also check out how long the warranty is. The longer a mattress company will back up their product, the more they believe in it. Many brands offer 15-year, 25-year, or even lifetime warranties. Every bed we recommend comes with a lifetime warranty, so you can be sure that the mattress you pick is covered for life.
Value
For some people, buying a new mattress comes down to the price tag. Whether you’re on a tight budget or ready to splurge, you want to feel like you're getting your money's worth. When figuring out if a mattress is worth the cash, I always say check out reviews—both on and off the manufacturer’s site, especially if you can’t check the bed out in person at a store.
Also, make the most of any sleep trials. Most of these trials last anywhere from a couple of weeks to a full year. That gives you time to test it out before committing, totally risk-free. If you’re not happy, you can usually send it back for a full refund, as long as you do it during the trial period.
The company’s policies, like sleep trials, can really add to the overall value. Some brands throw in lifetime warranties, long sleep trials, free accessories, or even white glove delivery when you buy a new bed. That extra stuff bumps up the value of your purchase and helps you get the best deal. We rate customer service out of 5, taking all those factors into account, along with the delivery process, to come up with our final score. Make sure to consider this when figuring out the value of the mattress so you get the full picture of what you’re really getting with your new bed.
