IKEA's VIMSIG is a three-piece foam mattress made specifically for the company's extendable children's beds. Its adjustable length, washable cover, and two-sided feel make it practical for a growing child, but its 3 7/8-inch profile leaves little room for deep cushioning or sturdy edges. It is a smart fit for lighter children already using an IKEA extendable frame; it is a poor substitute for a full-depth mattress for a larger child, teenager, or adult.

VIMSIG at a glance
| Mattress | Overall Score | Pros | Cons | Ideal For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IKEA VIMSIG | 3.3/5 | Three lengths; washable cover; two comfort surfaces | Shallow cushioning; weak edges; noticeable seams | Lighter children in IKEA extendable beds |
Is the IKEA VIMSIG worth it?
Yes—if you already own an IKEA extendable bed and want a mattress that can follow the frame through all three lengths. VIMSIG's reversible foam gives children a useful choice between medium-firm and firmer surfaces, and the removable cover is easy to wash after spills. Those practical features matter more than luxury comfort here.
The trade-off is the thin build. VIMSIG supports a lighter back or combination sleeper reasonably well, but a child who spends most of the night on their side may feel more pressure at the shoulders and hips. The perimeter also compresses quickly when used as a seat. Buy it for fit, convenience, and simple care—not for plushness or adult-level support.

How we evaluated VIMSIG
We set VIMSIG on an IKEA extendable frame at each of its three lengths. At every setup, we checked back and side alignment, shoulder and hip pressure, temperature change, motion transfer, recovery after compression, and stability at the perimeter. We also removed and refitted the cover and repeatedly attached the extension pieces to see how the seams behaved during normal setup and use.
Our testing experience
VIMSIG measured the advertised 3 7/8 inches thick once it was fully settled. At the shortest length, the mattress felt compact and evenly supported. Adding both extensions did not change the feel of the main section, but the seams were easier to notice when a tester lay diagonally or moved a knee across a joint.
The two surfaces felt meaningfully different. We rated the egg-shaped side about 7/10 for firmness and the smooth side about 8/10. The textured side allowed slightly more give at the shoulders, while the smooth side kept a back sleeper flatter and made reading in bed feel steadier. Neither side provided the contouring of a deeper foam mattress.
A 44-pound load compressed the center by about 0.9 inch but sank roughly 1.6 inches when positioned two inches from the edge. That gap matches what we felt while sitting and scooting along the perimeter: the middle held up adequately, while the edge folded down quickly. Heat buildup was moderate rather than severe. The surface rose from 69.8°F to 76.1°F after 30 minutes of contact and cooled to within 2°F of its starting temperature 10 minutes after the load was removed. The thin foam also settled movement quickly, which explains the mattress's strong motion-isolation score.

Should you buy VIMSIG?
Start with the bed frame when you choose a mattress. If you own an IKEA extendable bed and want one mattress to cover all three lengths, VIMSIG is the most balanced foam option in the range. Its 3 7/8-inch profile and two comfort surfaces offer more versatility than the thinner PLUTTEN without moving to a spring mattress.
Next, consider the sleeper. VIMSIG is best for a lighter child who sleeps on their back or changes positions. A dedicated side sleeper, a larger child, or anyone who often sits on the edge will benefit from the extra depth and stronger support of a thicker model. Standard Twin and Full mattresses are not direct replacements because they do not match the extendable frame at its shorter settings.

What to know before you buy
VIMSIG's specialized shape is both its advantage and its main limitation. It works across the three lengths of an IKEA extendable bed, but it is not a standard Twin or Full mattress. The shallow foam can feel hard at the shoulder and hip, the perimeter is weak for sitting, and the joints between sections become easier to feel at full length. The washable cover helps with everyday messes, but the children's-mattress category is excluded from IKEA's mattress limited warranty.
How VIMSIG compares with other kids mattresses
Why you might still choose VIMSIG
-
It matches all three lengths of an IKEA extendable bed
-
Its two surfaces provide more comfort choice than a single-feel foam model
-
The removable, washable cover makes routine cleanup straightforward
Alternatives to consider
IKEA PLUTTEN is the direct budget alternative. It uses the same three lengths but is thinner at 3 1/8 inches, uses lower-density foam, and feels the same on both sides. Choose it to spend less; choose VIMSIG for a little more depth and a genuine choice of firmness.
IKEA INNERLIG is the closest step up in price and fit. Its 4 3/4-inch profile uses Bonnell springs in the main section, so it feels livelier and more substantial than VIMSIG. It is the better match for a child who needs more depth but still requires the extendable format.
Helix Kids is an 8-inch hybrid offered in standard Twin and Full sizes, with a firmer side for younger children and a softer side for older children. Its coils and reinforced edges provide more structure than VIMSIG, but it costs considerably more and only makes sense after moving to a standard-size frame.
Saatva Youth is a premium dual-sided innerspring for ages 3 to 12. Its age-specific surfaces, center-third support, and full-depth build make it a long-term standard-bed option, but its price is several times higher than VIMSIG's and it does not serve the same space-saving frame.
Nectar Kids is an 8-inch, dual-sided foam mattress with a removable, machine-washable cover. It offers more cushioning depth while retaining the quiet movement control of foam. Consider it for a standard Twin or Full bed; stay with VIMSIG when adjustable length is the priority.
Tips for getting the best fit and feel
-
Add a waterproof protector before the first night
-
Let your child use one side for several nights before deciding whether to flip it
-
Align the extension pieces carefully so every seam lies flat
-
Use a fitted sheet sized for the frame's current length
-
Wash the outer cover inside out with the zipper closed
-
Rotate the mattress end to end occasionally to spread wear
-
Keep it on a firm, supportive base
-
If shoulder pressure persists, move to a deeper mattress rather than masking the problem with frequent side changes
-
Confirm current price, stock, return terms, and exchange conditions before ordering
FAQs
Is VIMSIG comfortable enough for nightly sleep?
For a lighter child, yes—particularly for back and combination sleeping. The thin profile is much less comfortable for an adult, a larger child, or a side sleeper who needs deep cushioning.
Which side should my child sleep on?
Use the egg-shaped side for a medium-firm feel with slightly more give. Use the smooth side for a firmer, flatter surface. Give either side several nights before switching so your child can judge it consistently.
Can you feel the seams between the three pieces?
The seams are most noticeable when the mattress is fully extended, especially if someone lies diagonally or presses a knee directly onto a joint. Careful alignment and a snug fitted sheet make them less distracting for a child.
Does VIMSIG sleep hot?
It retains some warmth, but the shallow foam releases heat faster than many thick all-foam beds. It does not feel actively cooling, so breathable sheets and a comfortable room temperature still matter.
