Firmness is obviously a big deal when you’re shopping for a medium-firm mattress. We personally tested every mattress on this list so you can get a true sense of how firm each one feels. To do this, we used our firmness scale that runs from 1 to 10 to keep things consistent. The general benchmark for medium firm is about 6.5, but since feel is also super subjective, we included beds that fall anywhere between 6 and 7 or come in multiple firmness versions.

Medium-firm mattresses usually give that sweet balance of support and comfort for different kinds of sleepers. To get the full picture of how each bed handles pressure buildup, we collected honest feedback from our testers on how each mattress felt and used a special mat that creates thermal images showing exactly where the pressure hits on the body.

People who deal with joint pain or who like that deep “sink-in” feeling need a bed that really delivers on pressure relief. Latex mattresses will lightly contour to your shape, while memory foam and polyfoam beds usually give the most deep-down cushioning. You can also toss a foam topper on your bed if you want to boost the softness and ease the pressure on a medium-firm mattress.

To test pressure relief on our medium-firm beds, we roll out a pressure-mapping mat across the mattress and lie in different sleep positions. The mat picks up where pressure builds up on the body using thermal sensors and creates a color map that highlights those spots. On the map, blue and green show areas of low pressure and good relief, while red and yellow mean there’s too much pressure in those zones.

It’s super important that your mattress keeps you from overheating since plenty of studies show that cooler sleep equals better rest. When testing, we look for cooling materials like coils, gel- or copper-infused foams, and phase-change fabric (PCM), since these features give us a sense of how the mattress will handle heat. We then use a thermal gun to see how quickly it releases warmth. Our testers lie on the bed for a few minutes and then measure how much the surface temp rises from the start. We consider anything under an eight-degree increase to be good cooling, and under five degrees to be excellent.

Edge support measures how sturdy the outer edges of a mattress are. Strong edges are a sign that the bed will last longer and stay stable — and that’s especially important for people who need extra support getting up, like older sleepers, folks with chronic pain, heavier individuals, or pregnant women. We test edge support by sitting and lying along the sides and measuring how far the mattress sinks using a tape measure. Anything deeper than five inches counts as weak edge support. This matters a lot for medium-firm beds since no one wants to feel like they might roll right off the edge.

Motion isolation is about how much movement spreads across the mattress when your partner, pets, or kids shift around on it. Nobody wants to be woken up in the middle of the night because the person next to them can’t stop moving. We test this in a couple of different ways.

Partner Test: One tester lies still on one side of the mattress while another gets in, out, and changes positions on the other. The person staying still raises their hand every time they feel movement from their partner’s side.

Ripple Test: We set a big container of water on one side of the bed and then move around on the other side in different sleeping positions. How much the water ripples or splashes tells us how well the mattress keeps motion from transferring across the surface.

Those dealing with back pain. If you’re not sure what kind of bed to pick to ease that back pain, go with a medium-firm mattress. A bed that’s too soft lets your hips sink down too far, which can mess with your spine’s alignment. If your mattress is too firm, it won’t give enough contour or cushion where you need it most. No matter how you sleep, medium-firm mattresses tend to hit that sweet spot between comfort and support when it comes to keeping back pain in check.

People who aren’t sure what firmness to choose. Medium-firm beds sit right in the middle of the firmness scale and have a nicely balanced feel. Because of that, they work for a bunch of different sleep styles. This makes them a solid choice for combo sleepers or couples who don’t share the same preferences. This versatility also makes them perfect for guest bedrooms or vacation rentals where lots of different people will be using the bed.

Back sleepers. Medium-firm mattresses are a great match for back sleepers for the same reasons they’re great for people with back pain. Side sleepers usually need something softer to cradle their hips and shoulders, while stomach sleepers do better with a firmer mattress that keeps their body from sinking. On the other hand, back sleepers need both pressure relief and steady support to keep their hips lifted. For these sleepers, the right medium-firm bed can help stop stiffness or soreness from creeping in overnight.

Fans of super soft or extra firm mattresses. You might lean toward one end of the firmness scale for a few different reasons. Side sleepers, folks dealing with joint pain, and couples often like softer beds that let them sink in a bit. Stomach sleepers, heavier people, and those who need easier movement usually go for something firmer. There are definitely medium-firm mattresses that can still work for these types of sleepers. However, if you’re chasing that cloud-like softness or extra-sturdy firm feel, a medium-firm mattress probably won’t hit the mark for you.

Side sleepers. Most side sleepers won’t get the best pressure relief from a medium-firm bed. Side sleepers should look for something softer that hugs the shoulders and hips, helping ease the pressure on those spots.

The stuff a mattress’s made of really shapes how it feels and looks. Depending on your height, weight, how you like to sleep, and what your body needs for rest, one kind of mattress might just suit you better than another. Here’s a quick, no-fuss rundown of what to keep in mind about each type.

Latex

Latex has a springy, bouncy feel with a touch of sponge-like give. Its quick response keeps you from feeling stuck the way memory foam sometimes does, making it easier to move or flip positions. Latex tends to stay cooler than most foams, which makes it a solid pick for a sleepers who overheat or wake up sweaty. It’s also a natural material tapped from rubber trees, so it’s a good fit for people who have breathing sensitivities or want something eco-friendlier.

Latex beds usually give a firm, supportive surface that helps stomach sleepers keep their spine straight and avoid sinking too much. If the latex is too firm, though, it might not cushion enough, which can leave your chest or hips feeling sore or tense after a night’s sleep.

Memory Foam

Memory foam beds mold closely to your body and tend to ease a lot of pressure. Though old-school memory foam was famous for trapping heat, newer versions sleep cooler thanks to bigger air pockets in their design. The feel, firmness, and thickness of memory foam change depending on the brand, model, and price point. In general, moving around on memory foam takes a little more effort than on other materials.

Memory foam beds do a great job of hugging your shape, which helps take pressure off key areas and keeps the spine lined up right for sleepers. The downside is that memory foam can let your body sink too far down, which might throw your spine out of line and cause stiffness in your lower back or neck.

Innerspring

Classic spring mattresses use a framework of steel coils throughout the bed. Coils usually create a firmer, springier feel and offer solid support, though they can also spread movement more easily. Pocketed coils do better with motion control since each coil is wrapped separately in fabric.

Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses mix and match materials like coils, foams, and latex to blend support with comfort. They’re made in all kinds of firmness levels, from soft and plush to extra firm.

Hybrid beds often hit a nice balance between structure and cushioning. They offer enough firmness to keep a sleeper’s spine aligned, while still giving a little softness around the hips. Depending on the hybrid’s design, though, some may sink too much or create pressure points if the top layer is overly soft, which could mess with alignment and cause hip or back pain.

Your ideal firmness level really depends on how you sleep. But if you’re not sure where to begin, most folks tend to feel comfy on a medium-firm mattress. When we test mattresses, we rate each one on a firmness scale from 1 to 10—1 being crazy soft and 10 being rock-hard. We usually land around 6.5 for that universally comfortable medium-firm feel.

“Sleeping on a mattress that’s either too stiff or too mushy for your position can cause serious pressure spots and long-term aches,” says Dr. Dasgupta. “It’s crucial to choose a firmness that fits your sleeping habits, weight, and day-to-day lifestyle. Most mattresses run somewhere between six and 14 inches thick. Latex and memory foam beds usually lean thinner, while hybrids and innerspring ones tend to be beefier because of all those coils inside.

Most folks like their mattress to land in that 10-to-14-inch sweet spot. Sleepers tipping the scale past 230 pounds might want a chunkier mattress that gives deeper compression support. Some slimmer beds pull it off with fancy foams or a super-thick comfort layer that can hold its own against a bulkier mattress, but overall, thicker ones usually hold up better and feel more solid than thinner ones.

Body weight plays a big role in what kind of mattress feels right. As Dr. Harris explains, “People who weigh less will usually think a mattress feels firmer than someone heavier would.”

Lighter sleepers (under 130 pounds) often go for softer beds that cushion the body without swallowing them up. Average-weight sleepers (between 130 and 230 pounds) usually do best with something in the medium to medium-firm range for balanced support. Heavier sleepers (over 230 pounds) tend to need firmer or hybrid mattresses that keep them lifted and supported through the night.

Your sleep position also shapes what firmness works best. Side sleepers, who need a little extra give for the shoulders and hips, usually prefer a softer bed—around a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Back sleepers need proper spinal alignment, so they feel best on a medium-firm mattress—about 6.5 out of 10. Stomach sleepers, on the other hand, need something firmer—around a 7 or higher—to keep their hips from dipping too low and throwing their spine out of line.

Mattress prices are all over the place depending on what they’re made of and what extra features they include. For example, hybrids tend to cost more than most other types. Add-ons like motion isolation, adjustable firmness settings, or eco-friendly materials can also bump up the price tag.

Most queen-size beds range from a few hundred bucks to a few thousand, depending on build and quality. When shopping for a mattress, you’ll wanna stick with brands that treat their customers right—with good warranties, free shipping, and nice long trials.
